Kids listen to podcasts

Listening to podcasts has become a real hype. A hype that Generation Alpha has hopped on. Podcasts are so popular because they allow multitasking, entertain and listening to a podcast is also an easy way to learn new things.

Why listen to podcasts?

There are limits to how long any child can stand being inside all day, but those limits can be extended with some good entertainment. The best kids ’podcasts are more than people talking. A good podcast includes sound effects, music, and multiple voices to tell stories kids will love.  Audio is a very intimate medium because it feels almost like a one-to-one interaction on the part of the listener. The listener is drawn in because they are painting pictures in their head while listening. That makes it a very active form of consuming information and really engages kids’ imaginations.”

The benefits of podcasts

Research shows that a big part of learning to read is being read to, and story-based podcasts are a great addition to having parents read to their kids. The feature that defines the best family-friendly podcasts is that parents like them too. They can make long car rides go more smoothly, soothe a kid to sleep, or provide entertainment for downtime. Not only are podcasts a form of screen time unlikely to cause overstimulation, but they’re also family-friendly and offer a great way for you and your kids to learn about something new together. Podcasting is on-demand, so kids can listen to episodes whenever they want to. So, whenever parents need something to keep their kids busy, they can just put on a podcast for them to enjoy.

Popular podcasts

  1.   Wow in the world

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself getting schooled by NPR’s first podcast for kids. Hosts Guy Raz and Mindy Thomas lead listeners through a conversation around the week’s most incredible kid-friendly news stories. Each episode kicks off with a series of questions about a new amazing scientific discovery or finding, which are answered through comedy and debate.

  2. The Past and the Curious

Don’t let the title fool you; this isn’t a kids’ podcast about supercars, and unfortunately, Vin Diesel is not the host. The actual show is pretty great though; featuring comedic actors performing little-known stories from history is a playful manner.

  3. Tumble

All you need to know is that this is basically Radiolab for kids. In each episode, science is brought to life (figuratively, because nobody has that technology yet) through creative storytelling.
